Quake 3 has a wider variety of items and powerups than previous games in the Quake series, and all of them are multiplayer-oriented. The special powerups are not found in many places, but most maps have at least one or two of them. Armor and health is fairly abundant.
Body Armor No, folks, it's not a buck-toothed bulldog - it's an item that gives you 100 armor points.
Combat Armor This one gives you 200 armor points. Pick up as much armor as possible before grabbing this guy and you'll be sure that your opponents don't have a very good supply. It looks sort of like Satan.
Armor Shard Gives you 5 armor points. I've got to stop working late at night.

Battle Suit Basically, a Quake 1 Pentagram beefed down for deathmatch. For thirty seconds this suit will absorb all splash damage, including your own; plus damage from lava, damage caused by drowning, and damage from slime. Yummy. Obviously, use the rocket launcher and plasma gun while you have the chance to do it without damaging yourself. The BFG also works very nicely, but remember to still conserve ammo. Just remember that you are definitely not invincible - if a player hits you with a rocket directly it will hurt quite a bit.

Flight This item does not make a very lavish appearance in the Quake 3 retail package - it's on one map. It's kind of obvious why: it causes gravity to completely forget about you, leaving your navigation to your own device. When you have it, it's basically like turning noclip on and still being able to fire your weapon. Remember to only get near the ground when you need health, a weapon, or ammo. Other that that, you should mostly concentrate on aerial attacks. If you can, find a nice, dark, high corner near the ceiling and snipe from it. When mixed with Flight, grenades are great for entertainment!
Invisibility This item is just a little bit better than Quake 1's Ring of Shadows. With the ring, you became invisible except for your eyes. With Quake 3's Invisibility, you are completely cloaked. Only a slight refraction of light can be seen, and in the middle of a battle it is barely noticeable. While wearing it, you can safely assume that no one will ever see you. Muzzle flashes, rockets, lighting, and so on still show up, so be careful where you fire. Shoot only when no one is looking at you and they will never guess where it is coming from. This is an absolutely perfect item to use while sniping, but it doesn't give you much time - use it wisely.

Medkit Any Duke Nukem fan will recognize this handy little device. It's a carry-on item, just like the Personal Teleporter, which brings your health back up to 100 when activated. It does not automatically restore your health when you fire, nor does it last until you have gained a total of 100 points. Once you use it, it's gone for good. Remember this and you will find it very useful in the heat of battle. Activate it when your health is very low and there are no health packs around. If you can, grab any health packs before you attempt to use this - it is invaluable, so only use it as a last resort.
Mega Health The Mega Health, a well known item in just about any game, will add 100 points to your current health. Your health cannot rise above 200, and once you reach over 100 the health will slowly burn off. There are some situations where rocket jumping can be done to get to a Mega Health. In this case, if your health is high enough to survive the jump, it is well worth the damage you will take.
Personal Teleporter This useful T-shaped item will transport you to a random spot (specifically, a spawnpoint) in the level when activated. It is best used when you are in a battle with no hope of surviving or you are falling into the void. It will also save you from lava. Try to avoid using it just because you'd rather be somewhere else - more people do this than you may think. Keep it for a situation where it can save your life.
Quad Damage The classic icon of Quake is back, and unfortunately worse than ever. Because of the new multiplayer style of Quake 3, the Quad now only causes you to deal three times the damage. Well, you can't win them all. In reality it's still just as deadly as before, and you will find that nothing can escape the wrath of a Quaded rocket. This does, by the way, include the holder of the launcher. Be careful, okay?
Regeneration This causes both your health and your armor to quickly regenerate up to 200 points. It will last for 30 seconds, so while you have it go and fight. Sitting in a corner waiting to reach full health and armor is a mistake if you are healthy enough to survive a battle. Fight with it for awhile, and then hide when the item is about to run out. This way you can get the most frags for your money, and some bonus health as well. Just remember that you're not able to just run into firefight and survive, you still must be careful and avoid attacks. The effects from any hits that don't kill you, however, won't last for very long.

Haste Some of you probably remember when Q3Test came out and a bunch of people were using the timescale cheat. This item has about the same effect. You run faster and fire faster. The best weapons are those that are not normally rapid-fire, such as the rocket launcher or the shotgun. Automatic weapons are affected, but you do not gain as much of an advantage.
