The Quake Dictionary by Dr.Gibbs July 17, 2002
Confused? We all are. But it doesn't have to be that way.
There's such an abundant amount of unique vocabulary in the Quake community that many people - especially those that are new - have trouble understanding it. Chances are, you've seen at least one phrase or word that you didn't understand. Well, never fear... you've discovered a fairly complete list of both gaming terms and commonly used chat terms. Once you read this you may still suck at Quake, but at least you'll know how to say it!
1v1 - See TOURNAMENT.
"733t" - "Elite". Refers to something good, usually a player.
Acceleration Pad - Pads that launch you forward. (Quake 3)
Aiming Bot - A computer controlled assistant that controls aiming or firing. Usually just referred to as "bot".
Backpedal - To walk backwards.
BFG - Big F**king Gun. (Quake 2, Quake 3)
Bot - (1) A computer-controlled player. (2) Any program used by a player to artificially assist in gameplay.
Camper - One who joyfully partakes in CAMPING.
Camping - Hiding or sitting in one place with weapons, ammo, or health. It's not cheating, but it's usually frowned upon.
Capture the Flag - The game mode in which two or more teams attempt to capture the opposing team's flag.
CTF - See CAPTURE THE FLAG.
Double Team - When two or more players cooperatively attack one player.
Elevator - A platform that raises a player vertically. (Quake 1, Quake 2)
Engine - The software that controls the game's 3D scenes.
FFA - See FREE FOR ALL.
Fog of Death - The swimming fog that kills you when you fall into it. (Quake 3)
FPS - (1) See FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. (2) See FRAMES PER SECOND.
First Person Shooter - The genre of games of which Quake is a member.
Frag - (1) To kill a player. (2) A score point. Usually you lose frags when you either kill yourself or are killed by the environment, and you gain frags when you kill other players.
Frame - The fullscreen rendering displayed by the game's ENGINE at any given instant.
Framerate - See FRAMES PER SECOND.
Frames Per Second - The number of FRAMES your computer displays in one second, usually the number is averaged.
Free For All - The non-team game mode in which all players attempt to kill all other players.
Gate - See PORTAL.
"GG" - "Good game" or "great game". Used by players after a round has ended.
GJ - See GRENADE JUMP.
GL - Grenade launcher.
"GL" - "Good luck". Used before a round, most commonly in 1v1.
Grenade Jump - A jump in which a grenade's explosion is used to propel a player higher than normal.
Handicap - Found in the player setup. Gives you a lower maximum health and armor to make playing more fair. Rarely used. (Quake 3)
Handle - Your character's name.
"HF" - "Have fun". Used before a round, most commonly in 1v1, and often with "GL".
HPB - High Ping B*****d. Any player that uses a dial-up Internet connection.
"j00" - "You".
"JC" - "John Carmack", the lead programmer of id Software.
Jump Pad - Pads that launch you vertically. (Quake 3)
Lag - A period of high PING in which a player's ability to play is affected.
LPB - Low Ping B*****d. Any player who uses a broadband Internet connection.
LG - Lighting gun. (Quake 3)
Llama - (1) A player who cheats. (2) An idiotic or obnoxious player.
Map - The area players fight in.
Melee - (1) An ammo-free weapon. (2) A FREE FOR ALL match.
MG - Mahcinegun. (Quake 2, Quake 3)
Model - The three-dimensional representation of your character, a weapon, or other object.
"n00b" - "NEWBIE".
NG - Nailgun. (Quake 1)
Newbie - A newer player, usually not very skilled.
"OMG" - "Oh my God".
Own - To beat someone, usually badly.
Owned - To be beaten, usually badly.
"0\/\/nt" - See OWNED.
Ping - The time delay of communication between the player's computer and the server.
Polygon - A two-dimensional shape, usually a triangle, used by the ENGINE to create MODELS.
Portal - A TELEPORTER which you can see through. (Quake 3)
Resolution - The screen area's dimensions, measured in pixels.
Respawn - To re-enter the game after dying.
RG - Railgun.
RJ - See ROCKET JUMP.
RL - Rocket launcher.
Rocket Jump - A jump in which a rocket's explosion is used to propel a player higher than normal.
Screenshot - A copy of your Quake screen saved as an image on your hard drive.
Server - The computer which controls online play at a certain IP address.
Shader - Most commonly, the reflective effect seen on metals. From a mapper's point of view, a script that actively controls a texture's behavior.
Skin - The set of textures used on a MODEL.
Slipgate - A TELEPORTER built by the Terrans. (Quake 1)
Spawnpoint - A point at which a player RESPAWNS.
Spectate - To watch a game without actually playing.
"STFU" - "Shut the f**k up".
Strafe - To walk from side to side.
TB - Thunderbolt. (Quake 1)
Telefrag - A FRAG gained by TELEPORTING into somebody.
Telefragged - To be killed by someone TELEPORTING into you.
Teleporter - A device which transfers you to another part of the MAP.
Textures - The images displayed on walls, floors, weapons, etc.
Tier - A group of levels in Single Player mode. (Quake 3)
Time - The length of time a player has been in a game, measured in minutes.
Time Demo - A method of benchmarking Quake's FRAMES PER SECOND performance using a demo provided with the game.
Tournament - A game mode in which each player plays against one opponent at a time.
"UT" - "Unreal Tournament".
"UBT" - "Urban Terror".
Void - The black area that kills you when you fall into it. (Quake 3)
"WTF" - "What the f**k".
