What's this all about?

The Deathmatch Zone Newsletter is a free newsletter that's usually sent out once a month. It covers all the big Quake stories like mod updates, information on id Software, tournaments, and more. There's also plenty of news about what's happening at the D-Zone, including information on new features and future site updates. There are even some exclusive features you won't find anywhere else.

How do I subscribe?

To subscribe, all you need to do is enter your email address in the newsletter box on the left column of any page on the site. Once you sign up, you should start receiving the newsletter once a month. You can unsubscribe at any time, of course, and your email address will never be given to any third parties. It's safe, it's secure, and it's free - what more could you ask for?

============================== The Deathmatch Zone Newsletter ============================== July 27, 2002 Volume 4, Issue 6 --------------------------------------- Greetings Quakers, Welcome to the latest mutation of The Deathmatch Zone! The site's look has changed quite a bit, but the layout is very similar and all of the original content is still there. There is a lot of new stuff, however... so much that you'll have to keep reading to hear about everything. We now have 21 articles, 52 map reviews, 324 screenshots, 61 files, and 21 mods for you to indulge in. During that little break, the newsletter was also laced with a brand new format... you should find it to be a lot more entertaining. New Arrivals =============== * Quake 1 Screenshots ------------------- There are now 13 more Quake 1 screenshots, bringing the archive's size to 111. Among the new reviews are Depostation 74, Hong Exploder, Stauf's Last Stand, Experienced Trap, H2SO4, akom15, akom11, q3dm17_variant, akom2, and akom1. It touches on the topic of being a good sport and playing fair. It's a fairly complete reference of Quake-related gaming terms and commonly used chat phrases. Created with cross-referenced definitions with the confused in mind! http://www.deathmatchzone.com/q3article013.htm * Player's Guides --------------- All three of The Deathmatch Zone's official player's guides (Quake 1, Quake 2, and Quake 3) have been rewritten from scratch. Quite a bit was added to all three, including some new gameplay tips as well as a medal chart for Quake 3. Check out the main pages for each game to get access to the guides. * Mapper's Guides --------------- Both the Quake 1 and Quake 3 mapper's guides were also rewritten. They not only feature a lot more information, but also some completely new chapters on environment, publishing your maps, and more. Check out the main pages for each game to access the guides. Sorry, the Quake 2 guide is still in development. ================ 2. Headline News ================ * Return to Castle Wolfenstein ---------------------------- id Software recently announced the release of Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Game of the Year Edition. It features lots of new treats for Wolf fans, so you should definitely consider grabbing a copy of your own. http://www.idsoftware.com/business/home/press/index.php?date=20020626120000 * Doom 3 Award ------------ Doom 3 has already received an award, and it hasn't even been released yet... tell you anything? id Software announced that this year's Doom 3 booth at E3 won the "Best of Show" award, given by the Game Critics Awards Committee. http://www.idsoftware.com/business/home/press/index.php?date=20020621120000 * Urban Terror 2.6 ---------------- One of Quake 3's most popular mods, Urban Terror, is about to be updated once again. Silicon Ice Development recently posted a list of some of the new features and fixes in the version... it's quite extensive, and has some really sweet additions. http://www.urbanterror.net/ ==================== 3. Nuggets of Wisdom ==================== * Pineapples ---------- Grenades. We all love them, right? Of course. But here's a way you can enjoy them even more than you already do: in every game in the Quake series, grenades work very well on crowded servers. One thing you can do to make them even more effective is to find a relatively good hiding spot (something out of the common line of fire) and start tossing your entire load on top of a hot spot on the map. This can be a really good weapon, a commonly used teleporter, an item, or anything else that draws a lot of attention. Start looking for one of these hot spots as soon as you start the match, and make sure you pick one you can get to easily from the map's grenade launcher. If you can successfully spawn, make a run to the weapon, and then make it to your hiding spot, you can rack up some serious frags in no time at all. ================ 4. Monthly Picks ================ * Squishy Squashy --------------- A Quaded ax-murdering Quaker barely dodging a bolt of lightning, and another being squished by a spike. What's not to like? http://www.deathmatchzone.com/monthlypicks.htm * Q3Fortress 2.0 -------------- Even if it wasn't one of the most popular mods ever created, it would definitely be the biggest. Weighing in at nearly 200 megs with the 2.2 upgrade, Q3F 2.0 is worth every byte. This class-based teamplay mod has been in development for many years, and it shows. The Crystal Ball =================== * Quake 2 Mapper's Guide ---------------------- It's on the way, don't worry... however, it's probably a pretty long ways off. Its development was ceased when the new site was underway, so it has been a fairly long time since anyone has worked on it.
