The Deathmatch Zone  September 16, 2001: What's New?! The id download pages are going to change drastically... I am going to add a new folder interface and a lot of additional files. On the subject of downloads, I'd have to apologize that all of the files on this site lead to FilePlanet. This includes a lot of the map reviews as well as other things... but not for long. I am going to be removing all of the FilePlanet links on this site, but it will take quite a long time. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. id Software News Item  August 13, 2001: Rick Johnson held a seminar at QuakeCon 2k1 discussing possible ideas for the upcoming Quake 4, and PlanetQuake's site features a summary. Here's part of the article:

Story

As you may remember, at the end of Quake 2, your character escaped from Stroggos and crash lands his escape pod on another planet, his hand reaching out in victory ... sorta. There was some sentiment in the room to continue the story from this point, although not everyone thought it was a must.

Rick asked the group how they felt about the game's story -- how much it mattered to the gamer, and what kinds of devices would be preferred to advance the plot. General sentiment was to see more intricate stories than in the previous games, and that they'd prefer to keep the player in first-person mode during scripted sequences, as opposed to jumping out to 3rd person, which many people thought the illusion of "being" the character.

Check out the rest of the article here.

Quake 3 News Item  August 8, 2001: It looks like QuakeCon will be broadcasted live! The folks at QuakeCon Radio have given us more details about the upcoming broadcast:

After our announcement last week that QuakeCon Radio would be broadcasting LIVE throughout the duration of the event, we have been able to narrow down some of the awesome features that will be available. Using many volunteers with high speed connections as relays, QuakeCon Radio will be able to host well over 1000 listeners. Why would anyone care about QuakeCon Radio? I’ll tell you why.

Remember that press release from id Software announcing that new games would be released at QuakeCon? Well, QuakeCon Radio is doing one better than anyone else and is providing LIVE online broadcasting of both the id Press Conference and John Carmack’s speech. Listeners will enjoy crystal clear quality sound while hearing about the newest hit game(s) from id. Along with this major event, there’s a long list of others that have been confirmed, these include:

Live shoutcasts of select early NVIDIA QUAKE III ARENA CHAMPIONSHIP matches.

Live shoutcast and recordings of all final NVIDIA QUAKE III ARENA CHAMPIONSHIPS tournament rounds.

Roundtable discussion with mappers and coders from various well known and popular game modifications.

Interview with Shortbus mod team.

Interview with Discreet team.

Interviews with players and spectators of the NVIDIA QUAKE III ARENACHAMPIONSHIPS tourney.

Interviews with your favorite professional players.

Interactive IRC chats that let you ask the questions.

Interviews with QuakeCon staff and volunteers.

Now, this is only the list that has been confirmed as of 8/4/01; while this is usually where you’d enter the disclaimer saying that anything could be cut without notice, I’m adding something even better: there’s MORE to come! Interviews with some VERY Important People who will be at QuakeCon, coverage of some very secretive announcements, and much more are yet to come. You’ll all receive another email when the time comes for these, so be ready! The website for information (dates, times, etc) is www.quakeconradio.com; the site will be up and functional soon, so toss the link and story up as soon as possible! Thanks for your time, and talk to YOU later :-)

Be sure to visit their site here!

Quake 3 News Item  August 8, 2001: Just a few days after 1.29g was released, id Software released their 1.29h beta patch. You can download it here, or under the D-Zone's Quake 3 Downloads section.

-Dr.Gibbs

Quake 3 News Item  August 3, 2001: Weapons Factory Arena 3 does NOT work properly with the new 1.29g point release. Here are some details on the problem:

1.29g doesn't seem to work with 1.29f and WFA. I recommend that you continue to use 1.29f. For those that have installed 1.29g and are locking up or crashing. Reinstall 1.29f. I also recommend server admins continue to use 1.29f, as from reading forum posts on 1.29g it appears the "fixed" list is mostly bogus. Things reported as fixed aren't and things that should have been fixed aren't even listed. If you ignore this and get 1.29g anyway, do not use the exe install. It has a bug overwriting files. Instead use the auto updater that came with 1.29f.

You can read more and download WFA3 here.

-Dr.Gibbs

Quake 3 News Item  August 3, 2001: The 1.29g beta point release for Quake 3 was just released! Be sure to get this version if you want to keep up with the beta servers. Here's a list of changes / improvements:

7-26-01 (version 1.29g)
- Players joining (and apparently leaving) the game cause everyone to hitch
- fs_handleforfile: none free ERROR
- After last level of tier game doesn't stay on trophy screen, instead it takes you directly to next tier screen
- No sound in NT 4.0 at all with 1.29f PR
- There is a shader bug in Pro-q3dm6
- developer cheats like R_Showtris have been disabled in the PR (they were never disabled, the user simply needs to run the game with "+set developer 1" minus quotes, at the command line
- made /startOrbit cheatprotected
- Rcon issues now resolved
- fs_basegame isn't published to clients
- fixedlegs command in the animation config is apparently not working - + and - cvars fixed

Grab it here, or under the D-Zone's Quake 3 Downloads section.

id Software News Item  July 1, 2001: MSNBC, believe it or not, recently posted an article on cheating in games. Here is the introduction on their site:

The deathmatch was going hot and heavy. I had this enemy soldier in my gun’s crosshairs. I pulled the trigger a few times, but he was running too fast. In fact, he was running faster than my bullets were moving. This wasn’t a scene out of "The Matrix." I was playing an online multiplayer "shooter," a military simulation game called Delta Force Land Warrior where you can square off against 50 other players in Special Forces-style combat.

You can read the entire article here.

id Software News Item  May 21, 2001: I recently receieved an interesting press release:

3Q Launches 3Qlabs at E3 and Announces Business Partnership

3Qlabs to offer 3-D human digitization systems, helping game developers create more realistic characters for next-generation electronic games

LOS ANGELES -May 17, 2001-3Q inc., the technology company that enabled everyday gamers to capture a true 3-D image of their face, build a 3-D game clone and upload it into PC games to play, today announced 3Qlabs, a productivity solution for game developers facing the heightened realism standards of next-generation games, at E3 (Booth 6233) in Los Angeles (May 17-19, 2001).

With the launch of 3Qlabs, 3Q has taken the quality standards of its sister healthcare company, 3dMD LLC, and combined it with its existing consumer technology to help developers address critical productivity issues surrounding the creation of 3-D characters. Through dynamic digital acquisition of the human form, 3Qlabs offers system solutions that:

* capture expressions and poses in 2 milliseconds allowing a developer to obtain a spectrum of human emotions in the same session

* ensure run at rates in excess of 25 frames per second enabling full analysis of actual movement

"With higher expectations of realism set by platform companies such as Sony and Microsoft for next-generation games, developers will need a solution to upgrade existing human character images to realistic, living, breathing and moving 3-D human characters. 3Qlabs aims to help developers and publishers redefine the future of gaming by enabling true 3-D surface motion capture for the first time ever," said Chris Lane, 3Q's CEO.

3Qlabs is also announcing its relationship with French-based Technodigit, a software developer for 3-D point cloud meshing and 3-D model customization. The partnership represents complimentary technologies joining forces to enable game developers to tune 3-D models to fit specific quality requirements. In addition, Technodigit will provide 3Qlabs with the systems integration expertise needed for the French gaming market.

"3Qlabs is a key partnership for Technodigit because the company has the technology expertise to capture the human form. Technodigit will be able to combine our core technology with 3Qlabs to deliver levels of customization not currently available," said Laurent Mellah, Business Development Manager, Technodigit.

About 3Q inc.: 3Q inc. is a pioneer in 3-D human form personalization technology for the electronic entertainment industry. Through its Q-Clone Generator devices located in Seattle, San Jose and Dallas, gamers are able to capture and customize a 3-D image of their face, build a 3-D game clone and upload it at home into popular PC games such as Quake III Arena(tm). In addition to its consumer product, 3Q has made a commitment to the game development community by establishing 3Qlabs. 3Qlabs is exclusively focused on providing game developers with system solutions, which address productivity issues surrounding the digital recreation and animation of the 3-D human form. Quake 2 News Item  May 2, 2001: Z-Axis just posted a review on an old (but good!) Quake 2 single player episode called Last Day on Stroggos. Here's part of the review:

Last day on Stroggos starts with you waking up in some sort of cryogenic pod before leaping out, startling some guards and shooting holes in their bucket heads. Presumably all of this happens with you in your underpants as all scifi films agree that people going into cryogenic suspension do so in their underpants. I'm guessing it's all a bit chilly on Stroggos because you quickly decide that you'd rather be somewhere else (a trouser shop for instance) and set about escaping. This involves you running around various Strogg facilities, sabotaging stuff and fiddling with power supplies, before finally nicking the Makrons' teleporter and doing a runner.

You can read the rest of the review (and download the maps!) here.

-Dr.Gibbs

Quake 3 News Item  May 1, 2001: For those of you looking forward to Urban Terror Beta 2... Crossfire just posted an interview with Oswald concerning the new release. Here's part of the interview:

Urban Terror beta 1 first gave us a glimpse of what the urban terror dream was. A few patches and the mod has shaped into a more polished and dynamic game, arguably worthy of becoming a commercial product. Where is Urban Terror headed with the release of beta 2?

Beta 2.wow, right off the bat we receive a loaded question. Beta 2 is essentially a completely redesigned and all new mod for Quake III. Everything you knew and loved [or hated] In Beta 1 through 1.27 is no longer in Beta 2. Most notably, and I am sure many will agree was the unbalanced UMP45, which, when coupled with the laser site could score a headshot from across any map in Urban Terror. Weapons and damage that is inflicted on a model, has both been completely redesigned. We now feature A.R.I.E.S., our new damage system that include 21 locations on each model, which can be hit. Add to that the new real world physics of our weapons and this is the foundation of Urban Terror. In addition to that, we have all new weapon and player models, new skins, new levels and new features which will dazzle the Beta 2 players.

The rest of the interview and some good screenshots can be found here.

id Software News Item  April 10, 2001: Stomped just posted a new interview with Todd Hollenshead, the CEO of id. It discusses the new Gameboy version of Doom and a few other things. Here's part of the interview:

Stomped: What development company will be handling the Doom GBA game?

Hollenshead: That's still up in the air at this point. We have some options open to us that we will explore to make the best decision. We obviously want a company that can do good work, but we also need to have a company that doesn't mind a ton of input from us in all aspects of the game (technology, art, gameplay, etc.). We get really involved in projects like this and the developer will need to understand this and be able to work closely with us.

Stomped: Will the game itself be simply a straight port of Doom or Doom II or will there be any new content in the GBA version?

Hollenshead: The game design is still in the formulation process at this point, so it's all subject to change. We like the idea of using Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II as a foundation and then building from that, adding some new stuff, making some changes to make sure the game fits the controls, and maybe adding some new multiplayer options.

You can read the full interview here.

Even the early tech demo made jaws drop. What we saw seemed to be leaps ahead of what everyone else is doing--but then again, id has generally set the standard in gaming technology. And this early tech demo made me feel that the gaming industry was in for a profound change. I heard more than one person whisper, "what a great time to be a gamer." What does the DOOM tech demo tell us about where gaming is going?

id Software and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) are teaming up this spring to release Commander Keen, an action-packed, comedic quest to save the cosmos for the Game Boy Color. Commander Keen is rated "E," for "Everyone," by the ESRB. Commander Keen marks a return to id Software's roots -- developing over-the-top, comic book-style adventure games for kids. Based on id's original Commander Keen series on the PC, Commander Keen finds precocious 8-year-old superhero Billy Blaze on an all-new quest to save the world from his alien adversaries, the Droidiccus, Shikadia and Bloogs of Fribbulus Xax. "Commander Keen shows a kinder, gentler side of id Software," Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software said. "Like the original Commander Keen adventures, this is a game that appeals to the spunky 8-year-old hero in all of us putting the 'id' back in 'kid.'

id Software News Item  March 3, 2001: Mean Arena just posted an interview with id Software's new animator. Here's part of the interview:

Kiltron: What does your job consist of working on the new DOOM title?

Fred: Well. I'm a character animator.. so.. I'll be mainly focusing on character setup/character animation.. I've dabbled in modelling but I wouldn't say it's my strength.. I would like to learn more about it.. Kenneth and Seneca are amazing modellers, but I would like to learn more about it so I could help them build some stuff.. As there will be alot to build for the game..

Kiltron: How is everything going with the new DOOM animation system? Have you and Jim Dosé figured out a great method of incorporating the new system?

Fred: We have a great pipeline in place already.. I can import a model from Lightwave or 3DSMax. Set it up with bones.. Adjust the deformations. Then export it right into the game.. We can even do cameras etc. So.. Making cinematics should be a blast...

February 17, 2001: The Oxygen Tank posted a very interesting article about the new Doom... in it they quote some suggestions from other developers as well as their own staff. It's a very interesting read, here's part of it dealing with graphics:

This is one area in which I am confident id will deliver. John Carmack has proved time and again that he can create engines capable of breathtaking visuals. There are certain features that would make the engine stand out. One feature I have been wanting in a game for a while is deformable architecture. Red Faction is the only game I know of that will have this so far. The ability to affect the environment with weapons adds a whole new dimension but seems like it could be difficult to implement correctly. Another great visual effect is realistic locational based damage that actually affects that particular part of the body accordingly, as seen in Soldier of Fortune. Entry and exit wounds, limbs that seperate from the rest of the body and so on are some of the things that should be possible in the Doom engine. Having many varities of the same enemies would be nice, like having small visual differences from one zombie to the next instead of having an army of exactly identical enemies.

January 26, 2001: Looks like we can expect the 1.27h patch pretty soon, here's what Robert Duffy left for us in his .plan:

Point Release Status

We are getting close to finishing up fixing issues, from retail Team Arena and the 1.27g/h builds. No specifics yet but it should be in the not too distant future. This release will address all ( or most ) the bugs we have had reported and adds some new things as well. We have added a new "fs_basegame" so mod makers can base mods on other mods ( read that as use content from other mods ). There are more FPS speedups, some sound fixes, general ui fixes, better collision, etc. Lots of stuff and demos and protocols should all remain compatible so 1.27g and above will all communicate just fine.

Menu Content Release - To help facilitate and allow mod makers to utilize the new menu scripting in vanilla Quake III: Arena, we are going to release the .menu files and related shaders and textures used in the Quake III: Team Arena user interface. This will allow mods to use the new menu system without having to worry about the problems with re-releasing content from Quake III: Team Arena

We should be seeing it shortly, that would be great because we really could use a little excitement :)

January 16, 2001: 3DActionPlanet just published an absolutely hilarious article describing how you can annoy people in games. It's definately worth the read, here's part of the article:

Another old one. Acting like a jerk or being on the top of the scoreboard always hurts others more when they know it was done by someone who doesn't even know how to put in their name. The downside, however, is that people use that mentality when they go for an easy target, thinking you're a newbie. Another variant of this is to change your skin/model and name to match that of the top person on the server. That always gets on his/her nerves, and confuses other players.

You can read the full thing here.

January 16, 2001: D2K just posted an excellent interview with Joe Goss, a member or Tritin Films, proud holders of the upcoming Quake: The Movie project. Here's part of the interview:

D2k : I've seen the trailer and I reckon it looks pretty good and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the whole movie. With an anticipated release in 2001 or early 2002, we've some time to wait though! Can you give us more of an idea on the scale of the project? How long will the full movie be?

Joe: The full movie will be upwards of 50+ minutes. I would say "longer" but I wouldn't guarantee it right now. The project is immense, action packed, beautifully scored, and further more - it's made for the fans of Quake to enjoy.

D2k : What was it that started you on the idea of producing a QUAKE movie? How was the team brought together?

Joe: Tritin created several films before we decided to do something CGI and based on the game Quake. The idea of doing it came about when I began teaching myself 3D Studio Max. Realising afterwards the possibilities of what I could do cinematically with the software made me immediately start planning to make QTM. The team was brought together slowly. I contacted Bill Benners due to his popularity and reputation in the sound department. Kevin Riepl contacted me before we started the actual prodution. His email reguarded the score of the film. After hearing his pieces of music, I was very excited to have him on board.

January 15, 2001: Stomped just posted an interview with id's new level designer, Malvern Blackwell. Here's part of the interview:

Stomped: How has it been working at id so far?

Blackwell: So far its been great. The new offices are cool and everyone here is really nice, well except for that Tim guy. . .we need to get rid of him.

Stomped: What is your design philosophy when it comes to creating levels?

Blackwell: Frame rate is the first thing that comes to mind as something you really need to keep a handle on, having a beautiful map means nothing if it doesn't run. The second thing that comes to mind is neatness. It's not uncommon to be asked to work on other peoples maps, so I like to do unto others by trying to keep my maps rather tidy. Being asked to work something out in someone else's map and then opening this map to find you cant even see that the heck your doing can be a real pain. All the rest, like make it fun, make it interesting goes without saying.
